The controversial Greek-Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis is taking his Putin-backed MusicAeterna orchestra to plutocratic Baden-Baden next week to perform the Verdi Requiem

Baden-Baden’s intendant Benedict Stampa says: ‘In the past few weeks it has become apparent that the originally planned performances of “Tristan” could no longer have taken place as planned because not all the planned soloists were available. We then looked for an equivalent alternative with Teodor Currentzis and his ensemble as well as another organizer and, in view of the current situation in Ukraine, we came to the conclusion that we shouldn’t choose another opera, but a piece that was more suitable for the situation.

Soloists include Mathias Goerne and Andreas Schager.

And no matter how hard you try people are not buying what you’re selling.

Verdi Requiem is a fab piece with four bassoons, requiring an extra player. As a freelance bassoonist I move heaven and water to be available to play this great work. I would not touch this concert with a barge pole though

    Schager and Goerne?
    In Verdi’s Requiem?

How much offended you are 🙂 jokes on you! It’s just a concert and it’s just an orchestra. If you wish to sit comfortably in your sofa without attending concert – no need to write about it. Whether you’re Verdi lover (no) or pretty bad bassoonist (yes)

Brilliant comment! I think they don’t need you in the bassoon section. They will use professional ones…

Mr Lebrecht, I hate this picture.
Cannot stand it once more time!
