Rodion Shchedrin, who will be 90 this winter, teamed up for a Rachmaninov Romance with two top pianists, Kissin and Trifonov, both composers in their own right.

This session was filmed at Verbier in July 2018.

It would not be possible for the three to meet today. Shchedrin is a close friend of the Putin conductor Valery Gergiev. The other two have long since left Russia. The musicianship is transcendental.

  • Bill says:

Rachmaninoff is how the gent in question spelled his name with Roman letters.

  • Serge says:

“It would not be possible for the three to meet today.”

Well, I can easily meet with people I have political disagreements with; I’m sure it would also be possible for these three gentlemen, intelligent as they are.

  • NYCgirl says:

Loved this performance, thanks for sharing!

  • Elizabeth Owen says:

    Wow thanks so much.

  • Conductor says:

“The Putin conductor” shows how trashy, petty, vile, disgusting and grotesque Lebrecht can be. And I’m not even a fan of Gergiev…

    • Genius Repairman says:

Norman has always viewed the conduct of musicians and composers with a critical political lense. The Putin is the most unstable thing in Europe right now and he is harming his own people and culture, let alone the Ukrainians. Gergiev is a friend of this creature. Why be kind to him when he has made his choice?

    • Lev Deych says:

He is Putin’s conductor, and you are simply clueless

      • Conductor says:

Like Furtwangler was Hitler’s conductor? I don’t personally care, but you obviously have to broadcast your moral superiority.

  • John Marks says:

    Wowzers. Glorioski.
