Nazi victim composers get publishing deal
NewsThe American classical music publishing house, G. Schirmer (part of Wise Music Group), has struck a deal with with the Exilarte Center for
Banned Music in Vienna to restore the music of composers banned under the Nazi regime.
The initial output from Schirmer and Exilarte will be 300 songs, 100 chamber music works, 50 orchestral works, several operas and numerous film scores. Robert Thompson, president of G. Schirmer/Wise Music, says: ‘Exilarte has been a beacon of light since 2006 as the leading institution in locating, restoring, and making available musical works by composers lost during the Holocaust. Their work is vital, precious, and honorable, ensuring that these composers who were silenced during World War II are not forgotten.’
Currently, Exilarte represents the estates of 30 composers and musicians. They include the prolific Viennese star Walter Bricht, songwriter Wilhellm Grosz and German Lieder writer Gustav Lewj.

There are bound to be so many treasures in this collection that we won’t know how to play them all. This is really exciting! Question: why has it taken so long to make these works available?
It is unlikely that this collection will make on thin dime
Happy these works will be made available just wish it was spurned by corporate greed.

I think Mr. Greenberg’s comment, “Why has it taken so long?” needs to be researched and addressed.
Why is Adolf Strauss not on the list?
Kiepura and Eggerth or Loseff for that matter are composers? New to me but I always want to learn…
You are correct Fred, Kiepura and Eggerth were not composers. They were famous singers who crossed genre from the opera stage to movies and became household names; and had a special connection to Vienna. They met in Vienna and made their first movie together here. Then emigrated to the USA to escape Nazism. Hence, the exhibit at the Exilarte Center was in their honor. It was a splendid exhibit.
Fürstensaal should read Fürstenthal and Fuch should read Fuchs.
Erwin Schulhoff should be on that list. Truly one of the greats.
Hans Winterberg is part of Boosey & Hawkes prigram. The onliest composer of the Exilarte list who is not in the program of Schirmer!
