The Finnish soprano Karita Mattila – always a My Way artist – has posted a shot of herself as Herodias in the forthcoming Paris production of Richard Strauss’s Salome.

Karita, 62, says Twitter has been ‘a lifesaver’ since her divorce after a long marriage to her manager in 2019.

  • Elsie says:

As Frankie Howard used to say, “titter ye not”.

  • Hal Sacks says:

A 180 degree turn from her riveting performance as Madame de Croissey, the dying Prioress in Dialoges of the Carmelites.

  • Anon says:

    It’s clearly prosthetic. Who cares???

  • Tiredofitall says:

    Karita owns it…brava!

  • imbrod says:

About 10 years ago Paris Opera put Nathalie Dessay in a similarly “topless” costume for Giulio Cesare. The anatomy revealed was equally fake. Vive la France?

  • Ernest says:

    It’s a breast plate!

  • R. Brite says:

That’s almost certainly a nudie suit. But brava just the same.

  • Mr Marlow says:

Please dear, remember your age and cover them up!

  • David A. Boxwell says:

I’ve been looking for just those drawer pulls for my new dining room.

  • soavemusica says:

There was such a thing as “aging with grace”.

Also a thing of the past: production values.

What a pity. Mattila could have sung beautifully, on record, and leave a lasting legacy.

Is there a shop where operatic stars could buy good taste?

  • Maria says:

    Good old Frankie Howard!

  • Maria says:

    So much in your face!

  • M McGrath says:

I like it. Not really “topless,” though. That would be tacky. This is suggestive and a tease. She gets away very nicely with it. Brava, Karita. Kiitos. Beats the hell out of what they’re doing to the Ring and Wagner in general on the various stages!

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Even in one’s 30s this would be dodgy, but at 62…..(fill in appropriate adverb).

  • Player says:

Fake boobs to which the nipples rings are attached, so that’s just a swizz, Norman!

  • anon says:

    Prosthetics.

Common in Hollywood (and for drag queens, a fact).

  • ENRIQUE SANCHEZ says:

The world is getting tackier by the minute… rather appears we’re quickly on our way to become the next ancient Rome. Incandescent demoralization…

  • Bloom says:

I love the quote . It suits the daring beauty of Lady Mattila.

  • Tiredofitall says:

Looking at this photo, it isn’t unlike late Elizabeth Taylor.

  • Bloom says:

Okay. It is just the costume. Lady Mattila is not topless. But she is still a daring beauty.

  • kaa says:

I think she did the same when she played the role of Salome at the Met some time ago. I saw the production a few times; she was a terrific and unforgettable Salome ending the Dance with a brief ,let us total unveiling !

  • Barry Guerrero says:

If I’m looking at the correct photo, not only is she topless, but the front of her gown (dress?) is being held up by nipple piercings. Now that’s chutzpah. You go, Karita!

  • poyu says:

She is just being her! Anyone who knows her reputation on bold dressing wouldn‘t be surprised. And I am not saying it in a bad way.

  • Una Barry says:

The topless photo of Mattila as Herodias should be paired with her topless photo as Salome from a few years ago…

    It’s theater.
