Frankfurt Opera bucks audience decline
NewsOper Frankfurt tells us it has begun to reverse the post-Covid audience slump.
October has yielded 76% box-office sales. November looks like 85% and December is running at 80%.
Intendant Bernd Loebe says: ‘Oper Frankfurt’s box office is 5-10% lower than before Covid-19, due mostly to lost subscription holders.’
Ted Huffman’s new Magic Flute, which opened on October 2, is playing to 95% – 100% houses.
I’m so happy to hear this, but, then, not surprised with this Intendant! All hail Loebe! As a regular audience member – non-subscription – every evening in that house holds something special, something remarkable. And, no, the so-called big and famous houses and festivals are not always superior.
Looks like another of these ugly Regietheater…
Not every modern-dress production is an example of Regietheater, you know…
Regietheater or not, if I watched this production, I would find it too visually distracting from the music. I never had that problem with Everding’s Munich production, which both elucidates the plot and is theatrically creative.

I’m not surprised…I’ve never been to the opera in Frankfurt, but I have heard many fine artists who were nurtured there. They are doing something right.
