At 7:42 on this video, you can listen to the singer arranging an assignation with members of an Argentine sex gang.

The gang members have been arrested. Police in Buenos Aires say Domingo will not be prosecuted.

Some have called for him to be retired from the public stage.

  • Dwayne says:

What a scandal! This news came, like a bolt, out of the blue! Why would a person, of his stature, get involved in something, as sinister, and as wrong, as this?

    • Maria says:

      Perhaps he didn’t!

    • Kaf says:

      WHAT SCANDAL?

Let’s put this in proper perspective:

“Mendy” has been widely identified in the press as Susana Mendelievich, a 75 year old composer that Plácido Domingo has known for over 1/4 of a century.

So an 81 year old man is cheating on his wife with a friend who is 75 years old.

      Big Fucking Deal!

Hurray for octogenarian sex!! THAT ought to be the headlines!

  • Lothario Hunter says:

Muti famously said that in this day and age, Mozart would be in jail! He maintained this daring notion in this interview:

    https://www.ilsussidiario.net/news/riccardo-muti-stanco-della-vita-silenzio-ai-funerali-mozart-in-galera-col-metoo/2189084/

Oh, he was so right! He is bravo, always right! I think we are edging dangerously close to the criminal realm!

What is Muti saying? Why this silence? Perche Maestro, Perche? He and Domingo have a deep, deep affinity, only confirmed and cemented over the years by friendship and fate. They are both latin lovers. They are both (or were) Putin’s buddies – one likes to hang in Moscow, the other loves to get Russian awards.

Muti, you have to rescue your pal! He has done nothing wrong! Don’t be silent, come to his defense! Call Valerio Cappelli or Hedi Weiss, they will give you a printed page to defend Domingo! Your buddy needs you now! Don’t wait, speak now!

    • Novagerio says:

Could we please read one single post without one single Muti-bashing? You guys are obsessed!

      • Lothario Hunter says:

Your constructive criticism made me reflect, and prompts me now to clarify that it was never my intention to equate Muti to Domingo, except for the fact that they do indeed share the same view of women (as attested by the interview, which I did not make up).

In fact, Muti is much, much more similar to Pavarotti, only smarter. Muti is the Stealth-Pavarotti!

        In Chicago, we know! :-DDD

    • Luca says:

Your obsessive attacks on maestro Muti tell us more about you than about him.

      • Michele says:

The interview that Lothario posted tells a lot about Muti, actually. You have to translate it from Italian.

    • Maria says:

Muti another old man of 81!

  • Robert Holmén says:

    That is all around sad.

  • CRogers says:

This is extremely poor media report/journalism. How can one judge this? For an English speaking audience there is no translation. So I can’t judge who is speaking to whom or what about. Very shoddy.

  • Tamino says:

So apparently Domingo arranged for a meeting with a prostitute. And the outrage is about what exactly?
Did he do something illegal here?
Is it something that concerns anyone beyond him, that woman, and his wife?

    • Frank Mann says:

Trust me, ALL these things are stings run by the CIA, and have some political backstory that caused them to be set up.

They did the same exact black op to Bill Preucil, the distinguished concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra, 4 years ago, then -SURPRISE!- the only outlets that carried the story (and piled on) -IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!- were: WaPo, NYT, and NPR. ALL 3 well known assets of CIA, time out of mind. So original.

      Hmmm, Watson, a pattern here?

      LOL. LANGLEY.

      • Maria says:

Trust me? As a Brit, we trust no one who uses that phrase!

      • Tamino says:

You don’t have to resort to the CIA. Domingo’s son’s decades of entanglement with the cult of Scientology and dramatic breakaway from it give enough reason to believe, that the Domingo family has mighty and particularly evil enemies.

That doesn’t change the fact, that padrone too often couldn’t keep it professional and his snake in its cage, but does that justify the character asassination we have to witness these days?

      • Enrique Sanchez says:

The only thing I trust is the distance of the bottomless DEPTH of your rabbit hole.

    • Lynne says:

He arranged for a prostitute from an organization that was known for human trafficking. The question is, did he know that? He seems to have a long history with this organization.

      • Tamino says:

Unlikely that he knew anything about that organisation, since their hidden agenda was to trap celebrities with honey pots. You think Domingo wanted to get involved with them so they could blackmail him?

        • Angelina says:

The people who were arrested for running the cult/sex trafficking ring are longtime associates and colleagues of Domingo, from at least as long ago as the 1995 concert he performed with them.

It seems to me extremely unlikely that he was unaware of their criminal enterprise this whole time or that April 2022 was the first time he availed himself of the services they have been arrested for.

Particularly in light of the decades of sexual predation for which he is finally being held to account.

          • Tamino says:

“in light of the decades of sexual predation for which he is finally being held to account.”

Sometimes I figure many people live in a parallel universe where opinion, not law, rules.

Being a notorious womaniser and macho is not illegal, as annoying as it is for many women. (there are also a few who actually like it, particularly if it comes from a VIP).

Being a “sexual predator”, is by itself normal, being hungry for sex and seeking such satisfaction.
But the key question is how one transcends it in civilised and respectful behaviour.

The difference between the rule of law and a witch hunt by the mob is, that the rule of law looks at where the law was broken.
Bring it forward for anyone, including Domingo, but spare us your faux moral outrages.
If you are an actual victim or know one, bring it forward, use the full power of the law to persecute such unlawful behaviour. Otherwise get a life and let other people live their lives as they want.

          • Angelina says:

Caro, I *do* know some of his victims, and supported them when their stories came to light.

          • Tamino says:

Cara, that’s wonderful of you. But tell us, none of these cases were crossing the line to unlawful behavior, or were they? We haven’t heard about any law suits?
Unprofessional and very annoying behavior I can see. Breaking company protocol, sure. Have heard stories myself. But did he ever FORCE a woman into having sex with him? It’s a crucial red line.

We have the Julian Assanges and possibly the Placido Domingos, who are character assassinated for actually other reasons than sexual misdeeds.

          • Angelina says:

All of the cases of which I am aware exemplified unlawful behavior, on a spectrum from unlawful workplace sexual harassment to actual sexual assault.

You are probably aware that prolific sexual predator Bill Cosby is walking around free these days. It is re-traumatizing for victims to bring lawsuits, the burden of proof is very difficult to establish, it costs the victims years of their lives and often their careers to bring such cases to trial, and even when they do, the perp may still evade meaningful accountability. It is never so simple as initiating a lawsuit and trusting that the truth will out and the perp will be punished.

You may also be aware that the highly credible accusations against David Daniels are taking many years to work their way through the US justice system, and that his accusers have all but had to abandon their performance careers due to backlash from rabid Daniels fans who don’t care whether or not he is a rapist, they just like hearing him sing.

Sexual predators who are famous, successful, powerful men are very seldom brought to justice through the courts.

        • Lynne says:

Maybe he got involved with them because he figured he’d never got caught. The same reason anyone else gets involved with an organization like that.

    • Guy says:

It’s not pc for men to have sex anymore.

      • Angelina says:

It’s no longer *quite* as socially acceptable for men to have non-consensual sex. Or to sexually harass their coworkers. Or to avail themselves of the services of a criminal organization that traffics sex slaves.

However, there actually ARE other types of sex that men can have!! Did you know that? And it’s all pc and shit, too! You should try it sometime.

  • Gerry Feinsteen says:

He’ll be okay. Italians (particularly the Vatican) know very well how to maneuver this. But to think, a DIVO needing such services? One must wonder for how long he’s managed to keep this behavior up…or, more curiously, keep it up.

He’s always been a great tenor, but one must wonder how hard the Magic Flute can be after so many years.

  • Maria says:

Great, all in Spanish for primarily an English speaking audience with enough holiday Spanish to buy a plate of paella and a glass of wine. Clutching straws and real shoddy in your face sensational reporting by a 24-hour frantic news channel with no newas in August. A matter primarily between him at 81 and his wife as there is a very long marriage involved, not just a prostitute – and on the make. Pointless reporting on here too.

  • Slick says:

Guilty as sin. Guilty as Trump. I repeat myself.

  • Alviano says:

I am embarrassed to read and hear this. If he committed a crime, arrest, charge, and try him. Otherwise, leave us all to ignore this once-great man.

    • JJ says:

What or who stops _you_ from ignoring PD? Nothing. I believe you mean _we_ should pay attention only to news convenient to you…

Your reasoning is very black-and-white. Between committing a crime and not committing any crime there are many shades of gray; one of these is being grossed out by a person’s actions.

  • David says:

Where’s the English translation Norman? Did you even understand it?

    Somebody please post a translation!

  • JM says:

I feel the need to quote Sofia Petrillo. The man is a scuzzball!

  • William Osborne says:

NPR provides a summation of the conversation:

“In one excerpt from the wiretap recordings from Argentina, a man whom prosecutors say is Domingo is heard talking to ‘Mendy,’ a woman with whom he is allegedly making plans for a sexual encounter. On the tape, the man describes details of his plans to leave a dinner separately from his agents and other representatives, to elude their notice, so that he could meet her. Another excerpt includes ‘Mendy’ calling the alleged leader of the crime ring, Juan Percowicz, to celebrate that she has confirmed plans with the man, whom she refers to as “Plácido.”

NPR also notes that past revelations have not harmed Domingo’s career in Europe: “In an admiring profile published by Deutsche Welle in Jan. 2021 that hailed his ‘exceptional career,’ Domingo declined to address the allegations and said that he preferred to ‘devote himself to other challenges.'” Normally, I like the work of Deutsche Welle, but I think they missed the ball on this one.

Even if the “Johns” like Domingo aren’t prosecuted, I’m happy to see sex traffickers go to jail. I hope “Mendy” wasn’t underage.

    • Guy says:

I didn’t know Domingo’s middle name was John. He should probably change that.

    • AnotherSinner says:

@Osborne, your first mistake is trusting NPR and the AP. Both “news” firms have a lengthy and well-documented history of publishing wholesale fiction, half-truths, rumors, innuendo, and, of course (yes, of course), govt-leaked story plants to serve The Real Agenda, which are always covert, because all govts have such agendas and getting what they want requires that we be manipulated to manufacture our consent. You are far too old to be this gullible.
@Nelly provides a link to an article in her comment here, where it is made clear that Domingo is not involved, according to the Argentine Police Commissioner in charge of the investigation. It doesn’t sound like you speak Spanish, so you had to rely on NPRs “translation.” And NPR* counts on your reliance so as to tell you what they want you to hear, which is rarely the truth. I do speak Spanish, and the Police Commissioner makes it clear that Domingo is not involved and was not arranging a good time, but rather instructing how the chauffeur being sent should fetch him. I should hope by now that you have done a little more fact finding to support your petty denouncement of a living legend, because if so, then you know by now that “Mendy” is at least 75 years old. Not exactly a good time honey at any price.
But lurid and salacious rumors are so much more fun, esp when the target of them is not *your* father or grandfather. All efforts to take the Great Domingo away from his billions of fans will continue to be defeated. Many thousands of said fans continue to happily buy tickets to hear him sing to this day. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
*FYI, NPR has a MeToo activista misandrist on staff who continues to write smear pieces on Domingo and any other rich men she deems worthy of ruin. Her name is Anastasia Tsioulcas and she has a bio page up on the NPR website, go see for yourself.

  • Trebor says:

Set Auto translate to English on Youtube….. Even Domingo’s dialogue is translated.

  • TNVol says:

If he were 40 years younger, he would be using a mobile phone app to accomplish the same thing and no one would be paying one bit of attention.

Both scenarios I find incredibly sad for all concerned.

  • Nelly says:

Shame that only the anti-Domingo article is publiced on this site and not this one……

    https://operawire.com/placido-domingo-is-not-being-investigated-in-escuela-de-yoga-probe/

Typical the Domingo witch hunt of Slipped Disc

    • AnotherSinner says:

@Nelly, exactly. Seems SD has a chip on its shoulder against Domingo that defies logic. I’ve listened to the radio-telephone interview of the Argentine Police Commissioner who clarified that Domingo was not involved, but was an intended victim. Domingo was *not* arranging a good time, but instructing how the chauffeur that was being sent for him should come to his room so as to not cause a fuss. But as we all know, a lie will circle the world before the truth can get a boot on. And most people delight in watching someone else suffer from that lie, esp if that someone is famous.

  • Kaf says:

PEOPLE, PEOPLE, PEOPLE, let’s put this in proper perspective:

“Mendy” has been widely identified in the press as Susana Mendelievich, a 75 years old composer that Plácido Domingo has known for over 1/4 of a century.

So an 81 year old man is cheating on his wife with a friend who is 75 years old.

    Big Fucking Deal!

Actually, I doubt that there is any big fucking going on at all at 75 and 81!

My only question is: at both their ages, why even bother???

  • Jan Van Pelt says:

Domingo is so pathetic! that even though he was raised in Mexico and has a Mexican spoken accent. He has always ‘forced’ himself to speak with a fake accent from Spain.

    • Julian says:

Mr. Van Pelt : His “accent” is also a problem now? He can no longer sing? What else can you come up with to soil the name of a man who has never been found guilty of anything? You are the one who is pathetic, Mr. Van Pelt. God knows what kind of insecurities would force someone to attack a man about whom you know NOTHING! A total loser?

  • Sofia says:

According to El Pais Argentina, Domingo was the target. The Buenos Aires Yoga School offered “ontological coaching” (sic) to wealthy and vulnerable people that would lead them to spiritual enlightenment. In the process, they scammed them of their properties and other wealth.

There are recordings of the woman he met, 75 year old pianist Susana Mendelievich, “Mendy” — not a prostitute but the second in command of the organization — telling another member of the group that they had tried with music 30 years ago. They discuss the strategy this time, which was to get him to attend their motivational talks. “It’s another attempt, one has to keep trying, of course. Like slipping that we’re also doing this [the talks]. It’d be like opening two fronts.”

In another recording reported by La Nacion she tells the leader of the organization, also a musician, 84 year old Juan Percowicz, “Plácido said he could come to visit us, that is, that he’ll come to visit me,” adding with a laugh “I’ll have to sacrifice myself once more, I am so dedicated to service. … He’s been reduced to shit, Juan, I feel bad, I don’t wish him ill, but it’s so wonderful to see ourselves shining and waltzing in the skies and him nothing but shit. He told us everything they did to him. Are you thrilled? I love you so much.”
