RIPThe violinist Sato Yoko has died of liver cancer in her home town, Atami.
At 13 (pictured), she played the Khachaturian concerto with the composer conducting.
After studying at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, she came in second at the 1972 Paganini competition in Italy.
She was Leonid Kogan pupil
Plays with more verve than any of the Menuhin Junior players of recent. Today’s kids on the competition circuit are beefed up on countless masterclass coachings, often contradictory, and left with little of their own artistic DNA; instead, aiming to play the least offensively.
Enough of that cynicism.
My condolences to the family of Ms Sato Yoko. May her memory be for a blessing. Your music lives on, forever.
I very much enjoyed the video of Khachaturian and Sato Yoko, with both of them in their own versions of braces (suspenders), while the orchestra had to endure full-dress clothing.
Just wondering – in the video, does anyone know which orchestra this is?
