The formerly banned Russian soprano is due to appear at a charity event, ‘Austria for Life’, in the courtyard of Schönbrunn Palace on September 10.

Just one aria: ‘O Himmel, welch’ Entzücken’ from an obscure Beethoven cantata.

She is expected back at the Vienna Opera in January.

Netrebko, who holds a second Austrian citizenship, has her main home in Vienna.

Whatever you do, don’t mention the Ukraine war. It has greatly inconvenienced her career.

Comments

  • For crying out loud says:

Yaaaayyy!! Glad she’s back on stage where she belongs.

Music TRIUMPHS – always has, always will.

  • Maria says:

Good! Let her get on wlth her career and leave her alone with the hate mail.

  • Genius Repairman says:

She should be banned until the war is over or until she renounces the putin. Richard Strauss will forever be tainted with supporting the Nazis and if he had his time over again, I bet he would have left. Netrebko still has a chance (not that she is in anyway a Strauss!)

    • For crying out loud says:

Tainted? Lol you are funny. In fact, your comment inspires me to put on a recording of Strauss’s Alpine Symphony right now. Maybe by Karajan. Ahhhh – I’ve already gladly forgotten about their (irrelevant) political beliefs as I’m too busy being distracted by this glorious music.

      • Genius Repairman says:

Don’t get me wrong, I listen to rhe music of Richard Strauss and some of Karajan as well, but their history is always in my subconscious and the music is that little bit less enjoyable for me as a result.

      • Manana says:

And you are ominous, macabre if you can listen to music without thinking about so many innocent victims. And what for? Because some maniacs in Russia think the collapse of their empire (USSR) was a tragedy? And officially announce a country bigger than France with the population of 45 mln should either become Russia or be completely burnt down? And if you think Russia will stop there you are tragically wrong. Once when you will be listening to Strauss they will come after you too.

        • For crying out loud says:

Oh yes I’m definitely ominous and macabre because I don’t light a candle in memory of an innocent victim every time a minor chord is played in a piece by Strauss.

This is why the politics of Russia have nothing to do with it. Leave music alone.

  • Egon says:

What a shame. They try to rehabilitate a warmonger.

  • Harry Collier says:

But all during the American massacres in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Iraq, Syria, and so on .. American-based musicians were able to perform and record. Why one rule for them, one rule for Russians (or Chinese, Iranians, Cubans)?

    • Egon says:

Which US-American artist supported those massacres in a press conference??? Netrebko DID support it in a press conference. She has not distanced herself from this with a single word to this day!

      • Perspective says:

Mate, care to look at her instagram and press release from her agents? Stop saying bullshit without proof. It’s just appalling how vile/deaf some people can be.

      • Perspective says:

also, since you seem to be so lazily prejudiced:

        • Egon says:

First she was against “the war” without mentioning which side started this war. Then it took her five weeks to condemn the war AGAINST Ukraine. Very credible. And certainly unaffected by the fact that she would otherwise lose her western engagements. But till today no word against Putin, no word to withdraw her former political actions like the press conference 2014.

          • Perspective says:

Oh dear, besides coming now with futile arguments after being shown that you were lying in your earlier post, if you are such an unforgiving sanctimonious hypocrite (care to cancel every single artist who played in Russia or in a venue financed by oligarchs, i.e. virtually all the classical music ecosystem?), that is your problem, not mine. Enjoy living in hate x

      • kaa says:

which of them (or you) said anything in public about these atrocities

  • John Cavanagh says:

For God’s sake, leave her in peace you envious un-talented mob of jackals.
She has provided an un-estimable amount of pleasure to the world, and her music and videos will be played long after you, and the bullies who now rule Russia, have disappeared.

    • awful mediocre netrebko. says:

“She has provided an un-estimable amount of pleasure to the world, and her music”

Well some of us don’t happen to like a totally ruined voice warbling and over-vibrating all over the show with only a passing pretence at intonation.

It’s typical of the Russian singing school, – loses all control over the age of 40-45.
(Ask me how I know, I work in Russian opera).

Some of us also get no pleasure at all listening to a much over-rated singer, well past by sell-by date, not knowing when to stop, boosted on Russian TV galas ad nauseam.
      She’s 50.
It’s over, and has been for a decade now.

At least Renee (F) b1959 still has a truly magnificent voice, has preserved it, as has Angela (G) B.1965, both of them older, and with far better technique.

      • For crying out loud says:

You work in Russian opera? Perhaps as one of the cleaners? Sounds like someone’s a bit jealous of Netrebko’s success…

Don’t get me wrong, cleaners are very important too – it’s good you’re making a big contribution to the world.

      • Johnny C says:

Renee F is done, and has been done for a while now. Angela G. is not as amazing as before, but she is still holding on nicely enough. As for Anna N, she should have retired ten years ago…

  • IP says:

Austria for Life, Russia for Death. Fits like a glove.

  • J says:

Ive been saying this from day 1- she’s in no actual danger as she has Austrian citizenship. Her choice not to denounce the invasion is a choice and clearly not a forced silence- as I’m sure Austria would shelter her if she denounced it.
If after this she still refuses, she’ll have yet again shown her true colours

  • just saying says:

Thank goodness…common sense and reasoning is finally prevailing

  • Potpourri says:

Anna Netrebko has been greeted with large enthusiastic audiences, including sold-out performances at La Scala and as Aida at Arena di Verona despite the controversy. People are voting with their time and money. The dogs bark and the caravan moves on, according to the old Arabic proverb. Nations may fight, but we must be entertained.

  • Stephen Osborn says:

Netrebko was “inconvenienced” by the Ukraine war, what a shame. I’m sure the mothers and children torn apart by the war wish the Russians would stop inconveniencing so much of Europe
