Happy birthday to Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, born in Breslau in July 17, 1925, survivor of Auschwitz and living witness to inhumanity.

Professional cellist, matriarch, heavy smoker, she has been a formidable moral presence at the heart of London’s orchestral life for well over half a century.

Long live Anita.

Hanns and Rudolf by Thomas Harding is the story of the German Jew Hanns and the German Nazi who became Kommandant of Auschwitz. Hanns became a British officer who successfully hunted down Rudolf who was hanged at Auschwitz.

With the release of the Jews, Hanns met Anita Lasker and was able to drive her to safety so she was able to make her way to England. She survived her internment for six years as she was a cellist in the woman’s orchestra.

A remarkable woman and survivor. Happy birthday.

Unbelievable, and such a wonderful woman. Never forgot meeting her at Heather Harper’s many years ago afyer I had had a sing8ng lessdon, and stayed on for a cup of tea and a bun. She gave me a lift to Willesden Green station. Wish her many, many happy returns of the day.

  • Melisande says:

It was through her son, Raphael Wallfisch, who also is a cellist, that I bought the book Inherit theTruth 1939-1946 by his courageous and remarkable mother. Do read her chilling but honest account of hell which she survived.
With a deep bow: Many happy congratulations and wishes for more years to come.
