US soprano is banged out on the Rhine
NewsThe splendid Wagnerian soprano Linda Watson has been given a Walküre farewell this weekend at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, whic she joined as an ensemble member 25 years ago. She went on to appear regularly at Bayreuth, internationally and on record.
Linda, 62, will continue to maintain a teaching studio at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
Uh, phrasing?
Linda Watson is, without a doubt, the best Brunhilda of her generation. I have had the privilege of seeing/hearing her a few times in Vienna, both in the Ring and in Rosenkavalier.
She was Thielemann’s Brunhilde of choice, with good reason.
Leb Wohl, Frau Watson!
That doesn’t mean much. Heard her several times
Mrs. Watson was Thielemann’s Brunnhilde after he had shoved her and only rehired her after discovering that her replacement (Adrienne Dugger, anyone?) was even worse.
Yes, the Brunnhildes of her generation went from bad to worse
“Banged out?” Norman, you must translate that for us Yanks.
When a journalist leaves a newspaper, the custom is for the departing person to be banged out with a clatter of implements.
I wasn’t when I left The Luton News in 1965.
Must be an English thing. And only in certain rags.
I’m British and had never heard the phrase before (at least with that meaning!)
Banged on the Rhine? A bit cold for performing, I should think.
To be clear, Linda Watson is NOT retiring (thank heavens). Her statement on Facebook (easy to find) was very clear. She is only ending her contract at the DOR.
Congratulations, Linda Watson! You’ve left your mark.
As we are more and more avalanched in gaudy pop, a career such as yours ends up being a bulwark for the continuation of profound music!
Congratulations to Frau K.S. Linda Watson, an amazing teacher to me but before all an outstanding Wagnerian Soprano! So proud to know her! An example for her generation but also for the upcoming ones!
