The Devil defeats Munich
NewsMessage from Bayerische Staatsoper:
To our great regret, the second performance of the new festival production THE DEVIL OF LOUDUN on June 30, 2022 has to be cancelled. Due to the current infection, there are several personnel outages in the crew, which cannot be replaced due to the complexity of the show.
The ‘outages’ might also be amongst what looks like a rather sparse audience.
Exciting premiere though, fortunately livestreamed.
I hope there are plans to record this production. Janowski’s Phillips recording was excellent, but it was made 53 years ago – yikes! – and is now hard to find. A shame, because I think it’s a fine work, long overdue a new recording.
This is never a good thing. Especially during Festspiele. Ever the cynic, though, has this nothing to do with the massive amounts of unsold tickets?
Don’t think so. Wolfgang Koch tested positive for covid and the actor hired to walk through his role while someone else sang in the pit has now also tested positive. The two other actors in the show also tested positive, so they cancelled the performance. There’s a long rehearsal this evening to teach the piece to two new actors and get the show back on the road. The premiere pit baritone is also back.
Personnel outages? They’re not electricity generators!
