The National Symphony Orchestra has added two years to Gianandrea Noseda’s contract as music director, taking him up to 2027.
It’s a defensive move, keeping out of the reckoning at New York, Chicago and other vacant spots.
Noseda has been in the Washington job since 2017.

Mr. Noseda has been a vast upgrade from his predecessor and the NSO acted wisely to keep him in the fold.
Good. He’s a terrific conductor and the NSO is sounding great, with good programming, too. Between the NSO and Baltimore (at Strathmore), lots of good symphonic music to hear in the DC area these days.
Washington DC is a music wasteland. It is only a good ecosystem for lawyers, politicians, and lobbyists. The performing arts are not important at all in DC: fine dining, drinking, and/or escorts are the only off-the-clock entertainment for 99% of those living in the nation’s capital. There isn’t a first class orchestra in the city (I refuse to call the NSO a very good orchestra), a decent music-training institution (only The Catholic University of America has a terrible music program… just listen to its orchestra!), a good opera season (The Kennedy Center only programs few operas every season)…
For decent concerts one must travel to NYC or Philadelphia.
Why single out Catholic University like this? What did they/the institution ever do to YOU?
Your “name” indicates you live in the DC area. Perhaps you have grievances with some/all the aforementioned organizations because you’re not getting hired, as a freelancer?
Tough. Practice more, win an audition in a “Euro” country.. or maybe even in “Philadelphia or New York”…where they have “decent concerts”

That is very good to hear! I agree that Noseda is a great improvement from Eschenbach’s tenure, one of the most uninteresting and pretentious conductors I have ever watched. yes, some concerts were interesting, but more often than not we were irritated by his fussiness and exaggerating details in the music, instead of just letting it breath and play out. It used to drive me so crazy that we stopped coming after Eschenbach’s first season. It was a real disappointment, as the hype around his arrival ended up turning into a disappointment for many, not because of the orchestra, but because of Eschenbach’s pretentious attitude, both toward the music and towards the audience.
Noseda was a relief and we are happy to see that he will stay on another two years.
Great move! He is a wonderful conductor, the orchestra and programming were susbsetnialy upgraded. Positive and promising improvements in DC! Most unusual..
