The war in Ukraine has obscured the suffering of 25 million residents of Shanghai, who have been locked in their apartments for almost three weeks under a draconian Covid lockdown that many consider excessive.

The handful of deaths that are being reported are not from the disease, so much as from the restrictions.

Chen Shunping, a violinist in the Shanghai Pops Orchestra, jumped to his death from his apartment window after several hospital emergency departments refused to treat him, citing Covid restrictions.

Chen, 71, was in agonies from acute pancreatitis. Not to treat a man such a condition is a breach of the Hippocratic oath.

Chen left a note saying ‘I couldn’t stand the pain.’

His death is reported in The Strad.

The measures of the regime are draconian and instituted rather than admit that their homemade vaccine is crap. They refuse to administer efficacious vaccines developed in the West.

  • Timmy says:

Awful story, but not shocking that this happened in a totalitarian, communist state.

    • Peter says:

There were and still are plenty of zero covid supporters in the Western world as well, who wanted measures like this. I guess they will keep their mouth well shut.

      • Amos says:

Comrade, the West has made vaccination the primary solution to controlling COVID. Regrettably disinformation from you and your colleagues has undermined that effort. No one in the West, unlike those in China and Russia, needs to censor their comments regarding COVID; receive a free non-Russian/Chinese vaccine and there is no need to resort to Mr. Shunping’s tragic action.

      • Sue Sonata Form says:

This is very true and it’s a shocking testament to the human willingness to follow the herd. Imagine thinking you can outsmart a constantly-evolving virus!! The Premier of Western Australia – who locked his people out of the rest of the country for 2 years – now has Covid himself!! What a fool that man is.

        • Amos says:

Lockdowns were pre-vaccine solutions to avoid a catastrophe. Thankfully he isn’t hospitalized or dead which is the point of receiving a vaccine. Stick to pushing far-right propaganda; attempts at science talk makes you sound foolish.

  • Rudiger says:

Very disrespectful to have the top of his photo cropped off on your home page! Does ANYBODY check/proofread their work there?

It’s displaying perfectly fine on the screens I have. And I know what I am talking about, as I spent several years in newspaper production, as Night Picture Editor.

      • Brettermeier says:

There’s obviously two possible reactions here, both equally true at the same time.

        1) 😀
        2) Ugh. I hate people.

  • Althea T-H says:

I am extremely sorry to read this: to see how much he was suffering.

  • Symphony musician says:

What a desperately sad story. A total waste of a life. There’s no way China can contain this new, extremely infectious version of Covid for long, given how prevalent it is worldwide.

  • Emery says:

Not to worry: This is The Thought of Xi Jinping at work. No need for a little red book this time around.

  • Zachary Binx says:

That’s china for ya. Hope nobody from the DING DING HAPPY orchestra kills themselves.

  • CA says:

    Sad.Horrific. Outrageous. I don’t blame him.

    Another victim of Xi Jinping.
