Didn’t realize that is the new name for what was known for many years as the Met Opera National Council Auditions, a very prestigious thing.
The addition of the donor names diminishes the proud heritage of the National Council Auditions. I trust the Met received a mega gift for selling off the family jewels. Everything has a price tag and there are many wealthy folks desperate for legitimacy. The age of quiet philanthropy is long dead.
Did that age ever exist? Harvard’s “Widener Library” was not named only recently – not to mention “Harvard” itself! The price tag seems to go back all the way to 1636.
What does it cost to get your name on an obelisk these days?
