Is this what those in Classical Music call a response to a Political and Moral crisis? To an unfolding brutal war? Playing a National Anthem?

    How quaint.

    • Piano Lover says:

      I had the same feeling…
      Now back to normal life.

      What do you suggest, Edward?

Prior to playing it they should have read the words in the Ukrainian anthem. It call slavic nations to beat another slavic nation. It sings fratricide.

While the Greek communist party’s union members, did not allow the Athens Municipality Symphony Orchestra to play the Ukranian Anthem 2 days ago in Athens…

    • Petros Linardos says:

This is pathetic. Since at least WWII and the civil war, the Greek communist minority has been overrepresented in some artistic circles.

By contrast, the Greek National Opera dedicated a recent performance to Ukranians, held a minute of silence and posted a message from a Greek/Ukranian member of their ballet.

      • Alex says:

However, I read that a similar reaction from around 15 members of the choir also happened at that performance at the Greek Opera yesterday accusing the decision of its administration to dedicate that evening’s performance to Ukraine.
“After the initial surprise, the angry audience quickly started shouting “oh”, “shame on you”, “disgrace”. The shouts were so loud that for a while the trade unionists could not be heard. However, there were some applause that were heard in the hall … The unionists did not leave the stage, the atmosphere was constantly charged. Until the great Latvian tenor Alexandr Antonenko, who plays Othello, came on stage and forced them to leave, and before returning from behind the stage to start the show again, he shouted I am Ukrainian. I am Ukrainian.”

The New York Philharmonic played the Ukranian National Anthem on Friday night, at a concert conducted by Herbert Blomstedt, before a program that consisted of Beethoven 5 and Nielsen’s 4th (the Inextinguishable). An amazingly appropriate program for these times, although it was announced more than a year ago. It has already been widely reported that the Met chorus sang the National Anthem from the stage apron before the premiere of the Verdi Don Carlos production.

    • John Kelly says:

I was at the same concert and the NYPO sounded magnificent. They played out of their skin for Blomstedt. It was a pleasure to hear a proper Beethoven 5 shorn of editorial silliness and vibrato-less string playing. I found the anthem very moving and almost everyone in the audience stood for the anthem and applauded vigorously. My 94 year old mother told me the BBC played the Czech anthem in 1938, the Polish anthem in 1939 and the Hungarian in 1956.

Nay, thou art not dead, Ukraine, see, thy glory’s born again,
And the skies, O brethren, upon us smile once more!
As in Springtime melts the snow, so shall melt away the foe,
And we shall be masters in our own home.

Soul and body, yea, our all, offer we at freedom’s call
We, whose forebears, and ourselves, proud Cossacks are!

    • John Kelly says:

So you’ve posted the above on at least 5 occasions here. I have read several translations and not one has any reference to fratricide and frankly it is nowhere near as warlike as many other anthems of other countries. It speaks of freedom from foreign domination and self-determination. Very appropriate for the current crisis.
Here’s the Marselleise “To arms, citizens!
      Form your battalions
      Let’s march, let’s march
      That their impure blood
Should water our fields”. Come to think of it, that’s approriate to the current circumstance as well.

      • Yana says:

Hi John, read the history of slavic nations to understand the anthem.

        • John Kelly says:

I know some history of Russia but I don’t care at all about the History of Slavic Nations. Those who wish to live their lives based on historical resentment lists are doomed to spiritual bankruptcy and perpetual disappointment. I care about the family blown up by Russian shells whilst fleeing for safety and the many others.

I feel sorry for the Western European Society. Their minds are severely manipulated. In their hearts an immense hatred is being cultivated. They are proudly, sincerely out of good will supporting the Evil without realising it. The EU Cultural, Business, Sports, Industry figures and organisations who participate in Russia phobia are clowns in the puppet theatre of FALSEHOOD. They are rushing to flagship their compliance with the anti-Russian nation, culture, language trend based on propaganda instead of knowledge. For Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian and former USSR nations what is happening now in Ukraine is a Tragedy. In the EU it is a directed Satan Clownery.

    • DG says:

Let me guess, Yana: you think that the Russians are heroically clearing out all the ‘Nazis’ from Ukraine right now? And that bombing the civilian escape corridors are part of that process? And that Russia needs to clamp down on all media not controlled by the state because it is getting in the way of this heroic campaign?

Stop and use some critical thinking skills, which are not limited to any one nationality.

Am confused why comments like this aren’t blocked. I’ve had a few SD comments blocked over the last couple of years which were far less inflamatory than this.

Would be interesting to know the editorial policy (if there is one)

Much as these musical moments might be touching for some, they are hardly more than feel-good moments in this “moral crisis” of life and death in the Ukraine. As it feels good to ban certain Russian performers. But this is NOT what the Ukraine needs to fight and survive. They need money and weapons (especially Turkish drones to shoot down Russian planes and helicopters), technology, internet connections to keep the government, citizens and the military connected. They require medical facilities and equipment, medicine. Spare the sentimental stuff and let’s invest our cold, hard cash: buy Ukrainian war bonds NFTs), contribute to armament funds, etc. If you’re a billionaire, buy a few Turkish TB2 drones at $1-$2 million per unit.

    • V.Lind says:

Where is “here,” God help them? I have access to Russian media here, in Canada. And I do take a listen to it — it is important to know what they are saying, what they are putting about. It is very, very revealing. Not of facts, but of what woke types would refer to as “their truth.”

      • Yana says:

Hi V.Lind, thank you. “Listen” is the key word. Here, in the UK. I have been living in the EU for many years already. My message is to address people who have stopped to self-educate and using critical thinking. They have been told to hate somebody and they are happy to do it with no personal grounds to it or any relevant knowledge. People stopped reading between the lines or watch behind the titles. If they think the conflict in Ukraine is limited to Russian invasion to the country they are naïve, if they think Putin is the only responsible in this conflict they are naïve, ignorant and brain-washed. It can’t be more obvious that this is a confrontation between Russia and the States, but who would think about it, if Russia, Putin and Russian nation have been subject to a “Russia is an Aggressor” campaign for many years. My baby, who is not 3 years old yet has been wittingly accused of being part of Russian world. They have cancelled a celebration organised by a Russian Society. Russian cats have been banned from participating in the World Cats Competition. Isn’t it a clownery? Certain people have disliked the list of literature I have proposed. This is to let them know, Gogol is a Russian writer from Kiev, Anton Makarenko is a Soviet Ukraine writer. The “Great Ukrainian Nation” enslaved by bad guys Russians is a soap opera for housewives who do not know the history of the region and have never lived in that region. If you are interested to try to understand what is going on in Ukraine now, read or listen to the John Mearsheimer an American political scientist, watch The Ukraine Crisis with Dan Cohen and Scott Ritter to start with. I may go and go along telling you about Moldovan experience of being imposed Western “democratic ” values since 1990s, what do we experience now having a pro-European government that is being put pressure to breach its neutrality….

        • John Kelly says:

Which lines would you have the dead mother and her children read between from the comfort of your home in the UK?

          • Yana says:

Believe me, I can hardly call it a comfort. Scared from what is happening in my motherland. Scared of the hatred cultivated around the world. Scared of the absurd over all Russian. How easily people let themselves to be manupilated. I hope this pitiful puppet Zelensky and his predecessor Poroshenko will live long life and will continually suffer of what they have combined to their people.

          • Yana says:

Why the Western so compassionate society was silent when mums and kids where killed in Transnistria in the 90s, in Donbass for the last 8 years, burned alive locked in the building in Odessa in 2014, whoever managed to exit the building was beaten to death by ukranian extremists? Police was watching as received the order not to interfere. This your beloved and brave Ukranian government chose a Nazi SS collaborator as a national hero for the people who fought german nazism, suffered from it.

      • Yana says:

and having now, among civil peaceful refugees, Ukrainian radicals that are flooding Moldova and destabilizing the situation. One our friend in Chisinau is now fighting for life. He was beaten up by a group of Ukrainian refugees, because he answered in Russian that he did not smoke. He is Moldovan in Moldova. He was polite to tell them in a language they could understand. Western press does not highlight this side of the events. There is one thing that makes us laugh in recent days – British Media. So pathetic and hypocritic it is. Hatred will not stop the war.
