Montserrat Caballe’s widower has died
RIPThe Spanish tenor Bernabé Martí died yesterday at the age of 93, outliving his late wife by three and a half years. They married in 1964, producing a son Bernabé and a daughter, Montserrat.
Marti enjoyed an extensive career in US opera houses, though never at the Met. The couple performed often together.
Martí did get two 1976 Met performances as Pollione with his real-life wife as Norma. Seems he filled-in for John Alexander. I was at his debut on 24 February.
In the scene from NORMA, Mr. Marti is a fine Pollione.
Sutherland’s beautiful tone and technical poise are remarkable — and she sang this role complete onstage at least 110 times.
