From Barcelona to Baden-Baden, the Russia bans roll in
NewsThe Putin pianist Denis Matsuev has been fired from his recital in Barcelona next week. His relacement is Javier Peranes.
On a larger stage, the Baden-Baden Festival – popular with Russian oligarchs – says it is seeking ‘clarification’ from Valery Gergiev to his attitude to the war. If he does not detach himself from President Putin, the festival will cancel a July residency by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra.
In Prague, the Dvořák Festival has disinvited Valery Gergiev and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra with cellist Truls Mørk for a concert on September 9, 2022.
Meanwhile, the Vienna Philharmonic has yet to announce a substtute conductor and pianist for two Florida concerts this week.
It’s about time that the artistic world stands up to those who support – and profit from – a murderous dictator like Putin.
NOW, let’s hear from Peter Gelb and the MET.
Sorry, cancel all Russian opera (EO with, unfortunately the seemingly untainted Golovotenko) and, of course, Netrebko, who should never sing in the West again. Peter Gelb might discover there are many ways to protest the enemies of the West.
The replacement pianist’s name is Javier Perianes.
Good pianist but on a different league.
Javier Perianes is a superb pianist! Spain has kept him busy as a well-guarded treasure. So glad for this opportunity for him!
Whoever, nobody cares. Anybody will be better than Matsuev!
What about the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra which in the the last few years seems to have had endless funds?

Tell us Malta Philharmonic Orchestra! Are you going to make a statement about the Russia-Ukraine situation? Tell us about who finances you!
We all know who finances Malta mafia! They will cancel no Russians!!
Why nobody among these ignoramuses in the West did not say anything against the Ukrainians when they burnt 50+ Russian people in Odessa on May 2nd 2014?!
Shame on you!
Let’s see Lucerne cancel its two summer Mariinsky/ Gergiev concerts. What other summer festivals are they due to play?
As alwyas, the swiss take no sides. They are impartial. They din’t care who they profit from.
It is not even so much politics, it is THE MUSIC that suffers when Gergiev or Matsuev play!! GET THESE IDIOTS OUT OF THE WORLD STAGES!!!
Keep the Russia bans up.
Once the iron curtain falls again, there will be only Matsuev playing in Russia on repeat, all other musicians may be banned for their calls for democracy.
It’s very sad how this affects the rest of wonderful Russian culture. All the ballet and orchestra tours being cancelled- most of these musicians probably hate abs denounce the regime themselves- and now they lose work opportunities and motivation. I hope it’s loud and clear that the people of Russia are against the war!
