Chopin winner makes London debut
NewsThe Philharmonia Orchestra has landed a coup with a Southbank debut next month of the Canadian Chopin competition winner Bruce Liu.
Bruce will play the lesser known second Tchaikovsky concerto. Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducts an all-Tchaik evening.
Bruce replaces Nobuyuki Tsujii, who ‘is unable to travel to the UK for our concert on 10 March due to Covid restrictions in Japan.’
Denis Matsuev, your favorite, plays an awesome Tchaik 2, and both versions of it. I wonder how Bruce Liu will do.
Matsuev is an insult to music.
Oh, really…
Yes, really.
And so is Liu!! Not only. Practically all “Chopin” winners are “an insult to Music” with very few exceptions. Argerich comes to mind first. And from 1927 a couple of others. The rest are a waste, like most competitions!!
You are an insult. What an arrogant comment.
Precisely
Bruce is the most impressive winner of the Chopin Competition since Zimerman. He was riveting in the Tchaikovsky concerto!
I last heard the Tchaik #2 with the fabulous Viktoria Postnikova and Gennady Rozhdestvensky at the RFH. Russian to the core…. a hard act to follow, will Liu and Rouvali be up to it?
No.
This is so true ! Postnikova and Rozhdestvensky are amazing, among the best ever interpreters of the 2nd Piano Concerto by Tchaikovsky !!! Thank you for mentioning this, @Frank !
Also Pletnev and Fedoseyev made a fabulous rendition in the beginning of the 90s.
Whatever Pletnev touches becomes GOLD!
Amen.
I don’t know how he’ll do with Tchaikovsky, but from what I’ve heard of him I would say Liu’s a major talent. That Chopin disc is one of the best Chopin recitals I’ve heard in a very long time. He seems to have it all.
You obviously have not heard much in your life, msc!!!
Congrats!
Hello, Pierre. I’m in my late fifties and have been listening devotedly to classical music since my early teens. I have heard a lot. I should have said, perhaps, “new Chopin recitals”. But I stand by my comment — Liu seems to be an exceptional talent.
Good for the Philharmonia. Now they need just to find a new Chief Executive…
Oh he’s going to play Tchaikovsky now, after winning the Chopin competition, and who won the Tchaikovsky competition, which goes along with Van Cliburn or Queen Elizabeth, of whom I always wondered what they [those two] had in common.
Nothing is rigged of course, thanks to those two, I mean three, oops I forgot Leeds and that makes five.
WHY doesn’t he just go to college, learn to drink beer, have a girlfriend, join a fraternity, use the Internet for what it’s meant to be, and CHILL OUT![?]
AND please, let me know where the question mark goes!
Take the rest of the week off!!
Yeah, I’m gonna do that too, play all round the world on these pianos that sound like kryptonite egg shells. NEW AND IMPROVED from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCYTAHkEgnE
Tchai/Rach fits him better imo.
Bruce Lui was wonderful in the Chopin competition! Wish him a terrific career which he is sure to have.
