She’s the real deal, I’ve performed with her (when she was on piano) and also played under her baton. A serious musician with serious chops, this is so cool! And she’s a composer too.
In 1983 I was at the MAW. The opera that summer was Don Giovanni. I got into the orchestra courtesy of a then very young now well-known player who did not want to be in the production. I’m eternally grateful. There were four performances, two in Italian and two in English. Theo Alcántara did the Italian ones, and a lady whose name I have forgotten – Karen …? – directed the English ones. It was the first time I was working with a female conductor – I was 17 – and, although I realized it was unusual, there was no weird vibe at all, and she was very good.
