Worst gig out there. Pressure of a high level Orchestra, minus an actual salary. Getting paid per service while working a fulltime job is ridiculous. No, thank you. No wonder they only hire principals who have already made a name for themselves and clearly are already earning well.
Not to mention, brexit, covid and generally speaking just the times we live in have turned this once great orchestra, into just one among the many generic, sterile sounding, mediocre orchestras out there.
In other words, this article isn’t news, because nobody cares about your brexit gig band ‘hiring’ people to only pay them per service.

Seriously? The LSO is a premier world class orchestra. Almost any classical musician would kill to win a job in the LSO.
I’ve been to many of their Barbican, post lockdown performances and they are playing very well indeed. I thought they were superb under Ticciati a month or so ago and very, very good under Noseda in Prokofiev and Richard Strauss.

I think most people fail to understand what you meant. The UK is the only place where professional orchestras don’t pay you a salary but you get paid like a freelancer, per service. That’s not very good, is it?
Thank God the situation in Germany is quite different. Not only do principals get (some) more money, they effectively play only half the concerts because there’s always two principals for every group in the string section, and they’re alternating. Also, you usually get one or two concerts a season with you as the featured soloist, if at all possible.
David Cohen was actually Philharmonia’s principal cellist in early 2001-2009 so maybe he decide that it might be now time for back to orchestral work/new things. A little bit like Carter Brey has a busy solo career in 80’s and early 90’s before age of 40 he decide to take audition of New York Phil principal position and start new chapter in his cellist career. Cohen is more than worthy successor for Tim Hugh so congrats to him and LSO!
The LSO operates a two-principal system, so he’ll only play in about half the concerts. So in effect he has the best of all possible worlds!
