Cuban Nightingale has died, at 91
RIPThe coloratura soprano Maria Remolá, known as the Cuban Nightingale for her high-note appearances with the national ballet, has died in a Santo Domingo care home, aged 91.
Bareclona born, she settled in Cuba in the 1950s and was regarded there as a national heroine.
Maria Remola helped to found the Cuban National opera I believe and supported many projects for young singers. Such a beautiful timbre , range and agility. Her habit of going beyond the written high note and into the stratosphere reminds me a little of Erna Sack.
Ima Sumac- I have a distant memory of her singing something called,I believe, “In the Depths of the Temple” in which she displayed a range of at least five octaves!
