The tabloids are reporting that the self-publicist Kim Kardashian brings in a pianist to play Christmas music each morning in December as her children’s wakeup call.

Her house pianist is Philip Cornish, listed on social media as music director for Kanye West.

Apparently, Kim does this every year.

We have a nativity ornament made in China that plays Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

    Kardashians on Slippedisc??

seems like a pretty nice way to wake up

I suspect not a single reader of Slipped Disc has any direct experience with having as much money, and as much disposable money, as Kim Kardashian (or Kanye West) does. The day to day experiences and activities of the extremely wealthy are mysteries to us, even if we are relatively “comfortable.”

So she has chosen an expensive indulgence that none of us could even imagine. But hey, at least it is an indulgence that puts some money in a working musician’s pocket. I’m all for that. No reason why the schedulers, personal trainers, plastic surgeons, and celebrity chefs should get it all.

I’m also all for kids hearing artists playing music, live and in person, as often and as much as possible. That’s the best way to create interest in music. Lord only knows television isn’t doing it any more.

Why do I think his repertoire is more likely to include “Department Stores make me think of Christmas” and “Santa Baby” than “Adeste Fidelis” and “Oh, Come, Oh Come Emmanuel…”?

      • Anon says:

Oh, I don’t know – intellectual snobbery and ignorance maybe?

Phil Cornish is the pianist for Kanye West’s gospel choir, Sunday Service Collective:

Both Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are in their different ways committed Christians.

        • V.Lind says:

I stand corrected. A much wider repertoire, and someone with church roots, and not a bad player. And, if it wasn’t quite intellectual snobbery, it was pre-judging based on the published activity of the principals — most unjust, as they are quite likely excellent parents.

And, for the poster below, I first heard “Santa Baby” on a summer visit out west to a couple of musicians who had immigrated from Europe and were still discovering things about North America. I though it was one of the funniest things I had ever heard, and still get a great kick out of it when I hear it.

One of my abiding regrets is passing up complimentary tickets to see Eartha Kitt on tour, not that long before she died. She may have been aging, and ill, but according to friends who attended, it was one of the great shows of their lives.

Back to Anon: you chasten me. My comment was hardly in the Christmas spirit. Thanks for calling me out.

      • Just a member of the audience says:

I love classical music and I love opera, but Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby” is hands down my favorite Christmas song.

    How nice!

I have installed a wake-up alarm clock system with my CD player which plays the first Pli of Pli selon Pli and that turns the beginning of my day into a cloud of profound sweet satisfaction which stretches-out till over my croissants. I need that, because the rest of the working day is mostly saturated with dissatisfaction, I won’t call it by name.
