The big house on 57th Street, which has taken its time going online, has now jumped in with two large footprints.

As of today, people in the US and 60 other countries can subscribe to Carnegie Hall+ on the Apple TV app for $7.99 per month. Other servers will be announced during 2022.

Content will include live perrformance and archive. Carnegie Hall has formed a partnership with German-based Unitel to access peak performances from the past half-century.

Competition will be fierce with the two classical online leaders, the Metropolitan Opera and Berlin Philharmonic.

It actually works! Unlike the bad Met on Demand experience I had, it loads quickly and I can skip around. Watching ballet at half speed shows you more. I’m impressed.

This will be the next big thing to threaten the business model; nobody need step inside a venue when everything can be streamed. I’ve always preferred the concert/recital hall but realistically I cannot get to Amsterdam or Vienna at the drop of a hat.

    • Kyle A Wiedmeyer says:

Well, in that case they’ll be making money that they otherwise wouldn’t be.

    • MacroV says:

There’s no substitute for being at the live show. I subscribe to the Digital Concert Hall but if I lived in Berlin I would be there every week, and here in Washington DC I still regularly go to the NSO and Baltimore – when they have something worth hearing, anyway.
