Dutch mourn top trumpet, 91
RIPThe death has been announced of the trumpeter and flugelhornist Ack Van Rooyen, one of the leading figures in Dutch jazz.
H worked mostly in Germany, with all the big visiting names. He also played with Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.
Very fine videography and recording broadcast by the Bayerischer Rundfunk. We see the enormous service Europe’s public television and radio has given to jazz over the last 70 years, how it has supported and documented the work of so many jazz greats with beautiful films. Americans have virtually no productions like this, even though jazz is our quintessential art form. Comprehensive systems of public broadcasting with rich arts programs like the Europeans have would be too socialist. Does the promotion of debased mass media lead to a debased society?
Tasty playing!
