Vienna Philharmonic lines up new solo bassoon
NewsThe Tyrolean Lukas Schmid, 26, a student at Vienna’s University of Music and Performing Arts, has won an audition for solo bassoon at the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, which means he is co-opted for a trial period with the Vienna Philharmonic.
He will take up the position some time next year.
Is there a Viennese school of bassoon playing? Serious question, because there certainly are for clarinet and oboe, which differ from the French schools and even German schools.
The Viennese bassoon is a variant of the German bassoon, with some changes in the vent keys and some different fingerings in the tenor register.
As far as I know, they have always used the same Heckel bassoons as are used all over the world, including France these days. You’re, of course, right about their oboes and clarinets, to which I would add their horns.
The bassoon in the photo is in fact a Puchner, but that’s also just a standard German bassoon.
The principal bassoonist of the VPO Orchestra also plays Puchner.
Viennese style uses minimal vibrato
Is there a way of identifying bassoonists from different orchestras in the same way we can tell concertmasters apart…..?
I heard about this over a year ago…??
