The FAZ has just reported that Munich’s interim new concert hall will open on time on October 8 – and on budget.

Stephan Schütz, the project architect, told the paper: ‘We are exactly on schedule. We will keep to costs and time because the whole planning was completed before we started the construction work.’

Couldn’t happen here.

  • Oh dear says:

Erm, the hall that opens in 8th October is the interim hall – the Gasteig is closed for refurbishment.
The”Isarphilharmonie” is the Münchener Philharmoniker’s hall, the BRSO rents it as one of two main venues in Munich.

  • Jo_mni says:

Mind you, the picture you post here is not the hall they’re talking about. In fact, the hall you’re displaying is very much over budget and in doubt as well. The interim building (Isarphilharmonie, admittedly rather impressive too) seems to work out well though.

  • Concertgebouw79 says:

Good fot the people of this fantastic city. I hope that they will continue to do some concerts at the Herkulessaal. I hope also that the new concert hall will have the name of Mariss Jansons.

  • Andreas B. says:

    and again:

two (actually three…) different halls are being built for different orchestras, separately funded by different public bodies:

Rattle = BRSO = Radio/State of Bavaria = new hall next to Ostbahnhof = picture in this post = not in time nor budget

Gergiev = MPhil = city of Munich = different hall = Gasteig / Isarphilharmonie = on time and budget = subject of the linked FAZ article

    • Isarphilharmonie cost: 40 million euros (has excellent acoutiscs)
New hall for BRSO estimated cost: at least 750 million euros

Is there something to be learned from that?

      • Tamino says:

That one should not make statements about “excellent acoustics” before the hall is actually being sampled with one’s own ears in reality?
Toyota has destroyed a lot(!!!!!) of money world wide in building bad acoustics. Los Angeles, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Hamburg, to name just a few.
Apparently he can design decent acoustics around a shoebox layout, which is probably more due to the general design than him, as others build good or better acoustics around that concept as well.

  • Karl says:

It looks like it is right next to the Isar river on the flood plain. Is that really the best place for it? remember all the flooding in Montreal in 2017.

  • Elizabeth Owen says:

That has got to be the ugliest building I’ve ever seen. Imagine the window cleaning bill too. Hope it’s user friendly inside.

  • It cost 40 million euros to create the Isarphilharmonie. For concert halls, this is a very low price, and its acoustics are reported to be excellent. The new hall for the BRSO is projected to be at least 750 million euros, possibly rising to one billion according to some commentators. The costly extravagance of new concert halls seems misplaced. They’ve become the new Versailles. The purpose should be art, not buildings to exercise municipal chest thumping.

  • Gustavo says:

A miracle that the plan was finished before construction actually started!

Reminds me of BER airport and Elphi which were also based on plans.

  • M McAlpine says:

Good for them. As we do not actually need any more concern halls in London another to satisfy Rattle’s vanity would have been rather a waste.

  • Marfisa says:

Since the image has been removed and the story adjusted, why not correct the headline too?

    • Andreas B. says:

      indeed!

and in a way, the headline is even more incorrect and unrelated to the article now than it was before.
at least the removed picture did show “Rattle’s new hall”…
