David Hyslop has a new orchestra to run
NewsThe US orchestral executive David Hyslop, a man of unrivalled experience, has been appointed Interim Executive Director of the Amarillo Symphony in Texas.
David, 78, has been CEO of the Minnesota Orchestra (1991-2003), St. Louis Symphony (1978-1991), and Oregon Symphony (1972-1978), as well as stand-ins at a dozen other orchestras and opera houses as they grappled with their futures. We reckon this is his 14th job in a 56-year career.
Amarillo has, apparently, a very good hall, built in 2006.
Congratulations David! They are in good hands.
Paul : Thanks for your kind comment and trust all is well in Orlando .
For non-US folks, it’s hard to imagine just how good the music programs are: the school band and orchestra programs are top notch and there are many fantastic university music programs, too. Not all tumbleweeds and cowboys out there!
You try doing cowboy’s work.
There’s a deep legacy left by Anshel Brusilow, once concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra (and conductor of a chamber orchestra here before a falling out with Ormandy) at North Texas State University of all places.
I’m not man enough – I’ll stick to playing trombone and annoying the woodwinds
Amarillo was the home of Sybil Harrington, a major supporter of the Metropolitan Opera, among many others.
It is a hard life when one still has to work aged 78.
Lucky he is healthy.
Henry :
Thanks for your concern. I don’t have to work. I do so because I enjoy it and it keeps me current and the interaction with all of the people is fun. It also helps that I have worked in Amarillo before when they opened the , then , new Hall in 2006.
I understand. Here in the uk i know people
Who have to work over the age of 65 they
Do not have a good pension .
Let’s just hope they can find a good permanent CEO. There’s such a dearth of that in the states, it seems, and it’s truly frightening–and such a shame (all in my opinion.)
I am available — 20+ years of orchestra management experience with major successes.
I am stunned to know there is enough audience to support a full professional orchestra in a town of that size. That shows what real music education can do, it seems. Maybe there is hope yet, yes, out there in oil country, for classical. Wonderful. I hear cows love classical too. Just sayin.
Metro area is 250,000 people. There are a number of cities this size which support orchestras.
We are all fortunate that David continues to find this all fascinating and rewarding. All fingers crossed that he’s good for another 15 years, or more. Some of us slightly younger folks are wearing out.
John : You are both kind and have a great sense of humor !!
Congratulations David! What a coup for Amarillo!
