Antony Sher is terminally ill
NewsIt was announced this morning that the great Shakespearian actor and memoirist Antony Sher has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
His husband Greg Doran is stepping aside as artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company to look after him.
Sher, 72, has been a huge figure across the performing arts for decades.
In 2001 he played the title role in Ronald Harwood’s play, Mahler’s Conversion.
My love and thoughts go out to you and your husband. xxx Louise
He is a marvellous actor — very sad news.
Antony Sher is an actor, writer and arts advocate of the very highest order. Sending him and his equally brilliant husband positive thoughts.
Having read Sir Anthony’s ‘Year of the King’ (describing the year during which he prepared to play Richard III) and seen him as Lear in 2016, it’s evident just how much Sir Anthony invested in every role. My best wishes to him and to Gregory Doran at this challenging time for them both.
I feel shocked and saddened by this news. As a young drama student in the late 80s I was totally absorbed by his book YEAR OF THE KING, an exploration of his preparation for playing Richard 111 at the RSC. It was, and is, a true inspiration of the actors art to be read and re read. His commitment to his art(s) is passionate. What a great example he was to me of how you could bring so many aspects of life to bare upon the role in question. Actor, writer, visual artist, etc. Greatness…….
