Classical fraudster is back in jail
NewsThe Times reports that former EMI and Warner executive Eudoros Demetriou has been returned to jail in Britain after failing to repay the proceeds of multiple frauds.
Demetriou, 82, was well-known in the classical world – but not quite as well known as the Times seems to think: ‘… Demetrio, a former conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra…’
Anyone remember that concert?
I think it is right for this blog to hold the Times accountable to high standards of factual accuracy, and to set an example in this space.
You’re a caution!
A proper caution, even!
The difference being that The Times has a large permanent staff with established external contacts, extensive archival and research facilities only available behind a paywall. SD on the other hand is a one-man operation with NL sifting through the merde with his left hand so that we don’t have to; and it’s free! and it’s fun! Be grateful.
Part of Slippeddisc is fun and eye opening, for sure. Most of its flaws have nothing to do with limited time and resources.
Like the New York Times? (Cough)
The NYT is in a class (a very low one) of its own.
What’s the point of putting an 82 year old man in jail?
Perhaps revenge.
Sarastro knows better:

He didn’t pay back the proceeds of the fraud. He knew the consequence and chose not to do so. Unless he forgeot where he buried it.
maybe to discourage 72 year old men from committing crimes?
I don’t know; let’s ask Rolf Harris.
“What’s the point of putting an 82 year old man in jail?”
Good point! Being a criminal should be ok at a certain age.
Und wenn dann der Kopf fällt, sag ich: Hoppla!
Oh?
You mean that, because of an advanced age, one should have a Monopoly “get out of jail” card, even though he/she is a criminal?
And what about the victims? And where do you draw the line, referring to the crime(s) committed? Murder? Embezzlement? Fraud? etc. What message would that send to society?
The point is, actions have consequences.
“Demetrio, a former conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra…” This is false reporting by the Times. His tribe only does chamber music.
I never heard boo about this guy. How about some more back-story before slandering him? And how is he any different than any other recording executive, producer or engineer? Are there any who are not fraudsters?
Maybe this is where they got the Vienna Philharmonic conductor thing from:

Why would an 82 yo man pay debts?
One can go directly to the source: the Vienna Philharmonic online archive. Unless he used a different name, it appears clearly that Eudoros Demetriou never conducted the prchestra.
