  • The product becomes the film. It’s a problem. Only the camera’s needs are taken into account: stage as TV studio; more hard surfaces; sets that look like furniture-store vignettes; sets that don’t change enough and are costly to store; sameness from production to production. The camera’s mobility is exploited; the view from the theater seat is disserved. Paucity or omission of background scenery. Weak telling of the story. Attraction of stage directors who want to be in film, who are not of the theater, who exploit opera budgets but don’t trust or even understand the music.

It is a much reduced season with one opera (Gianni Schicci), the Mozart Requiem, two sort-of highlights concerts, a Christmas one, and one multi-genre, multicultural women-led ensemble. Truly “a season like no other.”

I live in Toronto. I am thrilled by this initiative!
