The new home of the San Diego Symphony, opening August 6, is the Performance Shell designed by Soundforms and London partners Flanagan Lawrence, ES Global and Expedition.

It could hardly be more timely for Covid restrictions.

‘It’s an amazing, spectacular outdoor venue. We can hear each other wonderfully and you feel like you are in one of the top-notch concert halls in the world. The Shell has a mind-blowing organic quality….you actually can hear all the (different sound) balances and perform the way you would in a concert hall, not an outdoor venue,’ says Rafael Payare, Music Director of the San Diego Symphony.

It would take a great deal more than this to entice me over to SD, but at least the stick-beater’s happy, which is something these days, when conductors seem to berate halls (built and planned) with amazing regularity

I have friends in San Diego. I hear it is a very nice place to live.

Let’s see: nearly perfect weather year round. For California a city that’s not run by leftist idiots. Great food from many cultures. And a fine orchestra with a great legacy. I’ve heard some great concerts in SD over the past 40 years. Their regular hall in downtown is old and acoustically challenged. I can’t wait to hear this outdoor facility. And…anyone remember the ’60s Irwin Allen TV show The Time Tunnel?

I don’t want to go anyplace that’s “covid friendly”! Covid is no friend of mine.

  • Michael Atwater says:

Obviously you do not watch MMA
0ver 50,000 inside MGM Grand Las Vegas. No restrictions. Cubs game in Chicago? No restrictions. Only classical music seems to remain paranoid. The rest of us are living normal lives in the USA

    • Indoor concert venues here in the UK have only been able to open recently socially distanced, 50% capacity. Not financially very viable at the box office! Open-air is much safer, fewer restrictions. I had a great time in Las Vegas back in the day, performing in The Philharmonia Orchestra. Some of our musicians managed to gamble away most of their tour fees and per diems in the casinos!!

How are the US Covid numbers? The number of players to withdraw from this week’s Open Championship from the US after testing positive is unusually large for such a small sample group. But when I occasionally watch a few minutes of golf from the PGA Tour, I see no masks or social distancing in the galleries. Letting in fewer people than usual is not enough, and players interact with fans. It’s still out there.

And it makes visitors from the US very dangerous company. Luckily, most Americans seem to be travel-averse, so that works out fine most of the time.

      • Saxon says:

If people in Britain are mostly vaccinated (as they are), then it really doesn’t much matter if a few visitors haven’t been vaccinated; they will have a negligible effect on the spread of Covid.
