Why we need English National Opera
NewsFor infinite media gimmickry like this:
We’re on the lookout for Britain’s WORST singers to take part in #AnyoneCanSing on #SkyArts where they’ll work with us to completely transform their voices in just 3 months
The deadline to apply is THIS FRIDAY bit.ly/3wH16nv
That film about Florence Foster Jenkins is the bitter end. Can there be more predictable fodder to dish up to the public than this twee, cloying and pretentious twaddle? I guess film-makers have realized there is a huge ‘boomer’ cohort out there who want to see films about haughty grand dames, alzheimer’s disease, adoption, marriages that are long in the tooth and people in their twilight years suddenly deciding they want to sing??
PASS!!!
Every time I read your comments I am left thinking what a miserable, lonely , pathetic soul you appear to be.
Boomer bashing is the natural habitat of the Guardian. You’ll find many more there who will share your prejudiced bile.
They’re no more predictable than you are, Sue dear.
AutoTune can do it instantly, live. Don’t need 3 months.

A suggestion, SKY. Instead of this downmarket cr*p, why not be on the lookout for singers with potential and work with them instead?
You call it downmarket, I call it introducing new audiences to the artform in a way that’s interesting and accessible.
Glyndebourne Academy already does what you suggest.
“I call it introducing new audiences to the artform”
Evidence that it works please. I still like my idea better – so why not film Glyndebourne Academy instead? Not downmarket enough is my guess.
Will any music critics have the guts to enter?
Got them full pages of coverage in the press, pretty smart on ENO’s part I think.
