Veteran US manager dies
NewsThe death has been reported of Sheldon Soffer, artist manager and ballet presenter, who ran his agency from 1960 to 1999.
Sheldon was 93.
His clients included Pilobolus, the Mark Morris Dance Group and Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo.
Sheldon also worked with some remarkable musicians, soprano Elly Ameling and pianist Shura Cherkassky to name only two.
John, wasn’t Gunther Schuller with Sheldon before he joined your roster?
Yes. Gunther joined me a year after I set off on my own.
That was the late mesozoic era, right?
(Only kidding.)
Also Dutch hoboïst Han de Vries and I had the pleasure to visit his office in the 55th Street many times between 1975 and 1987 and also spend some time in his house at the small lake outside New York
Hello John Gingrich , that is some years ago!! Sheldon did a lot of funny and good work for countless people. I see his broad smile forever.
All is well here at 88, and travel will soon be possible, we hope – – hope all is well with you too.
Love , Elly Ameling.
Sheldon was a fine manager and good colleague with a great sense of humor, which helps !!
Boruch dayan emess. Always understanding and in good humor. Gone are the days of managers like Sheldon Soffer along with too many others. I will think about and remember him with love.
Baruch dayan ha’emet means Blessed is the true judge.
For many people who do not believe in a God this blessing is beyond their understanding.
Rejoyce in Paradise, dear Sheldon Soffer.
Sheldon was very kind to me in the late 80’s when I was considering a career in artist management, and he invited me to intern at his agency. He was a generous mentor with a great sense of humor. I recall artists on his roster at the time included the Emerson String Quartet, Lucy Shelton, David (now Sara Davis) Buechner, and Gérard Souzay. I never forgot Sheldon’s kindness…RIP.
How good it is to hear from Elly Ameling, and to see how many here remember Sheldon’s sense of humor.
