Live on-stage – June 30-July 17. Online July 13-18: £10
A new play from April de Angelis is always an event in my book and this one takes on the urgency of the climate emergency. In it, a woman stands alone on stage. She has one hour to change our future. One hour to avert a catastrophe. She’ll give everything she has, using a tapestry of testimonials from environmental activists.
Kiran Landa (see photo), best known for her roles in Line of Duty and The Wire, stars as the Woman. Extinct is directed by Kirsty Housley for Stratford East.
This is a new, and to my mind, very welcome, development being taken by several reopening live theatres, of mounting their work both for a live audience and online. This allows the audience the choice of seeing the actors live in person or watching at home.
For many, as we know, there is no substitute for the live experience, but for others, the option of being able to see new plays and concerts at home, as we have become accustomed to doing over the past year, is desirable and preferable. Good for Stratford East for understanding this and trying to reach both audiences.
