Safe, sold out concert in Vail
NewsThis is the New York Philharmonic last night with a jam-packed audience at the Gerald R. Ford amphitheatre in Vail, Colorado.
Jaap van Zweden conducted Beethoven’s G major concert with Daniil Trifonov, followed by Mozart’s Symphony No. 40.
Colorado has some of the best vaccination rates in the USA. The NYP is visiting a state that has handled this crisis the right way.
I don’t think we will know how “safe” it was for a few days.
Alarming statistics are beginning to emerge about people who are double-vaccinated contracting Covid. Less seriously — perhaps. There is not enough evidence.
I think the blanket “do what you like” attitude of the UK government should be approached with caution. I don’t actually know what US policy is, but I see sporting evens with packed galleries and stands and no masks.
Lind writes: “Less seriously — perhaps. There is not enough evidence.”
This is just dishonest. There is an enormous amount of evidence that taking the vaccine reduces the risk of serious illness by a dramatic amount.
Well you need to be updated … Delta variant now spread by double vaccinated people!
Vail packing people in like this, where their average audience age is towards the retiree age group is just simply irresponsible! Shame on the greedy management and orchestra.
Colorado is doing okay – 54% of the population fully vaccinated – but it’s still not in the top 20, according to the NY Times data:

When states get up in the 75 to 80% range, then I might consider sitting in a huge crowd such as this.
Hell yeah. No point doing anything unless it’s totally safe.
Nothing is “totally safe”.
It was a wonderful NY Phil concert at Bravo! Vail on Wednesday! St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra have all performed here this summer. The crowds (and musicians) have all been so happy to hear and perform live music again in such a beautiful and inspirational setting.
The Philharmonic seems to be gloating about this packed house, with the constant social media posts. I wonder if it’s going to come back to bite them though.
Yes, it’s (semi-)outdoors, which helps, but so was Trump’s Rose Garden ceremony last year that nonetheless turned into a super-spreader event. We shall see.
Many more people have “immunity” now (from the vaccine or from recovering from Covid) compared to last year.
I see nothing “safe” about this concert. Things are horrible in the USA at the moment. If I had bought a ticket for this performance, I would have demanded my money back.
What makes this concert “safe”? I don’t see a mask on anyone.
