A sombre message from the Canadian baroque orchestra:

My dear friends, it is with tears in my eyes that I write this post.

As many of you may have heard, our dear Tafelmusik music director emeritus, Jeanne Lamon, was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago and we just received news that she is now in her last days. It is so difficult for us to believe that someone so passionate, joyful, strong and full of life could be leaving us too soon.

As you can imagine, Christina is heartbroken – they only two years ago moved to Victoria to enjoy a beautiful long retirement after working so hard for so long. Christina has given me permission to write this post, as they are very private, and as a last “gift” to Jeanne, I have set up an email and fb page for people to send messages of love and support to them as they navigate this incredibly challenging time. Please feel free to send messages here and we will forward them along for you. If you think Jeanne might not remember how she knows you – include when you met her (ex. TBSI 2017).

I know she would love to hear stories, see pictures, hear about things you learned from her or how she impacted your life as she has mine! Feel free to share the links with friends who might also want to contribute to filling Jeanne’s last days with messages of love and appreciation. Please also feel free to send messages if you didn’t meet her in person but you want to thank her for her incredible body of work! Thank you so much. -Julia Wedman

Thank you for alerting us to Ms. Lamon’s status. I don’t remember reading about her having cancer so this comes as a shock. Thanks also for including the Facebook and e-mail links.

What sad news. What a trailblazer. Wonderful recordings too, for those of us who don’t journey to Canada. We salute her and her work.

This is very sad news indeed

Loverly interview with her and Bruce Duffie to read here.

Here is Tafelmusik’s joyful account of the 4th movement of Beethoven’s seventh under Bruno Weil with Jeanne Lamon as leader of the orchestra. Jeanne instilled such a great joy in music making.

This is so sad. I attended TBSI in 2012 and the inaugural Winter institute. They were two of the greatest experiences of my early musical career/education. The energy and enthusiasm these people developed around historical performance was truly legendary. Jeanne Lamon is a great leader.

  • Janet says:

I am an amateur violinist in a community orchestra that was blessed to have Jeanne Lamon conduct one of our concerts years ago. We played a Haydn Symphony. What a revelation! She woke me up to Haydn with the detail and colours she brought to our performance. Rehearsals were an education in musicality, history, technique and leadership. It is one of my favourite musical experiences ever. I’ve been a huge fan of hers (and Haydn’s) ever since.

    Such a loss.
