My other opera’s a Porsche
mainThere’s a bit of auto mach going on in the German opera world.
After the Vienna State Opera splashed a cheap Japanese car down its facade, Oper Leipzig has brought out its new Porsche for a major sponsoship deal around its Wagner festival next year.
This could get interesting. A Skoda for Barenboim’s house. A vintage Bentley for Covent Garden.
And what car would we choose for the Met? An old Caddy?
What old banger do you drive, NL?
I don’t drive. I have a driver.
Um what kind of vehicle:
“Doubtless an estimable Beast,
But not at all disposed to run!
And such a wagon! While I live
Dare I presume to see
Another such a vehicle
As then transported me!”

(the prior post’s link wouldn’t work, if again it doesn’t, you have to include the “!” which in the prior post for some reason came after the red part of the link, and wiki says it doesn’t have it, so you need the “!”)
Or his “non-royal” poem of Emily Dickinson is where the link should have lead
I met a King this afternoon!
He had not on a Crown indeed,
A little Palmleaf Hat was all,
And he was barefoot, I’m afraid!
But sure I am he Ermine wore
Beneath his faded Jacket’s blue —
And sure I am, the crest he bore
Within that Jacket’s pocket too!
For ’twas too stately for an Earl —
A Marquis would not go so grand!
‘Twas possibly a Czar petite —
A Pope, or something of that kind!
If I must tell you, of a Horse
My freckled Monarch held the rein —
Doubtless an estimable Beast,
But not at all disposed to run!
And such a wagon! While I live
Dare I presume to see
Another such a vehicle
As then transported me!
Two other ragged Princes
His royal state partook!
Doubtless the first excursion
These sovereigns ever took!
I question if the Royal Coach
Round which the Footmen wait
Has the significance, on high,
Of this Barefoot Estate!

Emily has no clothes, American lit crit’s biggest scam.
No brainer. A Pontiac Aztec.
The worst car ever built in the US.
Und natürlich in der Farbe Gelb.
Tesla.
Porsche has a factory in Leipzig since 2002, one of the few “western” German companies who opened a branch around there (with DHL), so it is understandable that they should strike such a deal.
I still remember Kleiber asking for and getting a custom-made Audi in lieu of payment for his concert at that auto works at Ingolstadt. He loved that car.
I read in a review of that concert that the Audi was prominently parked in front of the concert hall, ahead of hte concert. Talk about leaving in style.
