Musician is accused of rape at the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
NewsThe Daily Telegraph, a Sydney tabloid, is reporting that one musician in the Sydney Symphony has been accused of raping another. An investigation is proceeding.
There has been no comment from the orchestra, and no further information beyond the paywall.
In arguably the biggest scandal in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s 89 year history, one of its performers has been charged with raping a colleague who also performs music with the Australian cultural icon…
Very similar fact pattern to NY Philharmonic case.
Alcohol, passing out, non-consensual sex.
Except there were no criminal charges filed in NY. And it remains to be seen what actions the Sydney Symphony will/can legally take.
None, I suspect, as there is a similar high-profile case underway which occurred inside the Australian parliament house building, but NOT during working hours. Constantly it is misreported as “raped at work” when those writing this know full well it was “alleged rape in the place of work outside working hours”. When everybody was at home, tucked up in bed asleep.
All this kind of misrepresentation only ensures the courts won’t touch this stuff. Not in a thousand years.
But, of course, you can change the, er, ‘laws’ to ‘believe all women’ but how does that help males who are the victims of alleged assault? One law for the boys and another for the girls.
Doesn’t matter if it was out of work hours – it is still their place of work and should have a right not to be subject to rape.
Before he became famous as part of the much loved ‘two set’ double act, Brett Yang used to play in the Sydney SO.
And how is that even relevant? (Incidentally, Brett Yang was a Sydney Symphony Fellow, not a member of the orchestra)
thanks for clarifying that Dave.
what does that have to do with this article?
Any accusations of criminal activity should be investigated by the police not an orchestra.
I hope that is what is happening.
There’s a show in that… CSI: Orchestral Crimes
I’ve actually see this guy at work. He did it to my partner back in the day. All is forgiven as he is good at playing the French Horn . The amount of sexual harassment in Australia’s classical music institutions and orchestras was/is widespread. Many of my old lecturers ended up with their students and it happened over and over . Disgusting
