The East Neuk Festival, on the Scottish coast, tells it as it is.

  • It is notable that they used an image of a woman trombonist. In continental Europe there are very few if any women trombonists in full time professional orchestras. For example, Italy has 0, France 1, the Netherlands 1, Austria 1, and Hungary 1. In the top 20 orchestras in the USA there are 2 out of about 70 or 80 positions if I remember right.

In 2018 (and updated in June 2019,) Quartz Magazine counted the women in Gramophone’s list of the top 20 orchestras in the world. Just one of the 103 trumpet players in the 22 orchestras was a woman, and there were no women among the 99 trombonists and 26 tuba players. Some other instruments were also disproportionate: bassoon (86% male), double bass (95%), and timpani (96%). The Quartz article is here:

    • We (East Neuk Festival) were inspired by hearing from one young female trombone player (though the image is not of her specifically) and chose the image to represent the many young musicians we’ve heard from who have come close to ending their careers before they started due to the crisis.

    • So? says:

Couldn’t care less, and so what? Boo hoo, more brass players are men. Nonsense post with no point, which is what we’ve come to expect whenever you chime in.

  • John Borstlap says:

I find it very conservative and unbecoming to see men playing brass instruments. It’s WE who should do it, following the voice of modern times!

Never have women been so often maltreated as today. Now, imagine, if every woman would carry a brass instrument, who would dare to hassle her?
