Cleveland adds a maestro
NewsCleveland Institute of Music has appointed the Uruguayan Carlos Kalmar to be principal conductor and director of orchestral and conducting programs.
Kalmar, 63, has just finished his stint as music director of the Oregon Symphony, where he spent 18 years.
He succeeds Carl Topilow who led the conducitng department at the institute for 37 years.
First Trump said “America first”. Then now Biden says “Buy American”.
So what in the world is wrong with US orchestra hiring ONLY non-American conductors? It seems to be a fashion and nothing more.
Even post COVID they want to have all these conductors flying across the globe.
Careful – your ignorance (xenophobia?) is showing. He’s been based in America for at least 18 years, probably longer. I’d be surprised if he’s not an American citizen. But in your bigoted background I guess he’s not an American?
Great news! And now he’ll also be an easy commute from Grant Park in Chicago.
He’s good but CIM has a number of graduates who have gone on to do equally good things that could have filled the role with excellence.
Middle of the road talent who has not once astounded me with any musical interpretation.
That’s because you’re looking for ‘interpretations’, rather than just listening to what the composer actually wrote and enjoying it for it truly is.
