All shall have prizes: Texan mezzo rising
mainThe Walter W. Naumburg Foundation’s 2021 International Vocal Competition has been won by Erin Wagner, a mezzo-soprano from El Paso, Texas. She’s due to graduate from Juilliard this month.
Ms Wagner wins $25,000 and two New York concerts.
The jury was chaired by Dawn Upshaw.
I don’t understand the thrust of the headline, “All Shall Have Prizes,” which comes off as a mean-spirited put-down. Is Ms. Wagner somehow undeserving? That’s the impression that the headline gives.
The headline is especially inapt when it refers to a winning competitor: obviously, most of the entrants failed to attain the prize.
It is an extremely unfortunate choice for a headline. Clickbait, anyone? More New York Post than New York Times.
Norman Lebrecht isn’t a trustworthy or credible “Journalist”, keep that in mind.
Usually he uses it when someone already famous gets a meaningless prize. The Naumburg is a legitimate competition that you don’t just “win” because somebody thought you might become sad.
My thoughts too. And it tends to be a swipe at the judging.
A former required piano student of mine at MSM. Not surprised! Brava!
