T’s leaves redeem it from its melancholy, I think.
I find that for me to take Autumn Leaves seriously as a song or as an instrumental piece, I have to go to the effort of erasing the Roger Williams piano recording from my brain. Not easy to do if you are of a certain age, or at least an American of a certain age. And Lord only knows, I’m of a certain age.
Hearing this string quartet arrangement (beautifully played) brought to mind the Hollywood String Quartet’s recordings with Frank Sinatra. And I mean that in the least snarky way possible.
Now THAT would have been a recording: “Sinatra Meets Takemitsu, Featuring the Hollywood String Quartet.”
