The Brubeck estate has announced the death of bassist Eugene Wright, last surviving member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet.

Known as ‘the Senator’, Wright played with played with Billie Holiday and Charlie Parker before joining the modernist Brubeck.

    Sad loss but a great long lfe. One of those quiet professionals who stood behind the obvious stars in the spotlight and, like Paul Chambers, Jimmy Garrison and Gary Peacock, managed to make the whole so much greater than the sum of its parts.

    Gene Wright was a great bassist who fit the other members of the Brubeck Quartet like a glove.
    Excellent time, excellent taste – he and Joe Morello provided such a cool groove (in any time signature) for Brubeck’s and Desmond’s front-lining.
    Rest In Peace, Master Bassist.
