    I never travel to hear Harteros except if she’s singing in her hometown of Minich. Now even that is not a good bet…

    Meanwhile in the UK the Royal Opera House sells the family silver, or in this case the family Hockney to keep going whilst the Arts Council tries to sort out how to disperse Government money because, and who would have guessed it, many organisations are desperate for help. Harteros pulls out in Munich? No problem. ROH and the UK Arts Infrastructure on life support? We’re convening a committee to assess what little we need to do.

    I recently attended a concert in Antwerp
    where Sonya Yoncheva was the singer. She was excellent and this was reflected in the audience reaction.
    The last time I heard her was at Covent Garden a few years back when sang the title role of La Norma.
    One of the finest sopranos of her generation,
