Curtis rolls out quartet in residence
mainIt’s the Dover Quartet, the frst residency of its kind.
But how will it function when lessons are online?
The press pack doesn’t say.
The quartet members are all Custis graduates: Bryan A. Lee (Violin ’11), Joel Link (Violin ’11), Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt (Viola ’10, ’11), Camden Shaw (Cello ’10, ’11).
UPDATE: And then the cuts kick in.
Do it on zoom – really easy to have break out 1-2-1s with students and then bring them back together for a complete ‘ performance’ – have been doing it for months already.
They will do just fine with on line teaching and coaching from wherever they are in the world. They should probably offer technological help to their more senior colleagues.
The violinist mentioned is Bryan Lee (not Ryan).
Milena shares a house in Philly with husband Brook Speltz of the estimable Escher Qt.
There’s no need for ageist comments, Mr. Fitzpatrick.
and they studied at Curtis, not Custis (Martha Washington’s name before she married George).
“It’s the Dover Quartet, the first residency of its kind.”
Wrong!
The Pro Arte Quartet have been resident at the University of Wisconsin, Madison for more than a century. They were stranded there after the Nazi invasion of Belgium when Madison took them in. They are still there 102 years or so later.
Many other universities have followed this example.
It’s the first of its kind at Curtis.
No. The press release shows the following:
With this residency, the Dover Quartet joins the ranks of the legendary Curtis String Quartet and the celebrated Guarneri Quartet, among others who have served at Curtis in the past.
With all due respect, maybe you should have written it that way originally.
It is all about technology very little about the “art”but
Curtis and Dover will find a way to sell this latest “wow”as the young lady exclaimed at the end off her depressing
press pack appearance.
What is new about the residency is that besides the teaching and technology, Curtis will, in fact, become management for the quartet: “Beginning August 31, Curtis assumes responsibility for the Dover Quartet’s concert booking representation, which will be handled by the Curtis on Tour office, headed by Andrew Lane, Curtis on Tour’s managing director.”
