Death of top Canadian jazzman, 62
mainThe death has been reported of Hugh Fraser, pianist, composer, bandleader and drummer, a Vancouver-based giant of the Canadian jazz scene. Cause of death is unknown.
His son, Jimi James, survives him in the band.
And trombonist?
I don’t know the jazz scene at all, but 62 is far too young. RIP.
Trombonist avant tout, probably. But Fraser was a notorious multi-tasker. Good to see his passing mentioned here. He was one of these figures who makes so much happen that a lot of other musicians owe a lot of their work to him. Unflagging positive attitude, a distinctive compositional voice. He’d had cancer for the last few years.
Thank you. I have been aware of some of your work for some years, and am always impressed by the breadth of your knowledge of the Canadian music scene. (Among other things!).
