There’s a running joke in the movie. The stage manager’s name is Sondheim and he constantly screws up throughout the film. Mel Brooks is always screaming for Sondheim to do something, get something or someone, move the show along faster. A comedy troupe is supposed to go on stage. When they miss their cue, Brooks shouts out: “Sondheim, send in the clowns.”
