The Slipped Disc Daily comfort zone (37): Paganini under the Nazis
mainI’ve loved these variations ever since Andrzej Panufnik told me how he and Witold Lutoslawski used to play them in occupied Warsaw, in pop-up cafes in private homes.
I doubt there has ever been a better performance that Argerich and Kissin.
Great playing
Speaking of Panufnik, why do we never hear his music any more? It’s a great pity we don’t.
it’s had its day, so dull
‘…since Andrzej Panufnik told me…’. Norman does like a good name drop! Really we should have a photo of him with either composer.
Anyway, good piece. I’d forgotten it.
Don’t listen to them Norman. Keep these interesting snippets coming to us music-hungry masses.
BTW: I love the idea of a critic being criticized, makes a nice loop, very zen.
