The Department of Music at the University of Connecticut announces the appointment of Maestro André Raphel as Assistant Professor of Music and Music Director of the UConn Symphony Orchestra. Raphel was selected after a national search.
He was an assistant conductor in Philadelphia some years back; probably during the Sawallisch or Eschenbach years.
One of the finest people in the business, first-rate conductor, musician and educator. Congratulations to UConn on this selection, and good luck to Andre on this exciting new chapter!
Hope he likes Women’s Basketball.
UConn always has the best NCAA women’s bball team.
It’s what they’re known for.
I know. I went to a concert there at Jorgensen a few years ago and there was a basketball game going on – what a crowd for the game! Not so much for the Russian Orchestra. I’ve never checked out the UConn Symphony though.
Bravo to Andre, with whom I went to Yale many years ago. UConn is lucky to have him.
Formerly with the Wheeling (West Virginia) Symphony. He used to use his full name, Andre Raphel Smith, but apparently no more.
