London performer ‘slept under bridge’
mainElise Harris, an official of the actors’ union Equity, has said she knows one West End artist who wound up sleeping rough because he could not find affordable accommodation in London.
Any musician had a similar experience?
No friends, then?
Apparently not. And your point is…?
The price of accommodation in London is a huge challenge even for people in well-paid private sector job. In the arts it’s a nightmare – especially for freelancers.
I know a member of a regional opera company who says they are seriously out of pocket after a London visit. The per diem barely covers a couple of meals in the capital let alone anywhere to stay. I’m sure their management don’t have the same problem. Still, nice to have your hobby as your job.
